This painting is titled Saint-Rémy after the village where Van Gogh spent many of his final months in the Saint-Paul asylum during early 1890. It was during this time that he painted his famous Almond Blossoms as a gift for his newborn nephew and namesake. It was a tumultuous stay, during which he alternated between low periods of depression and mental illness and moments of joy and artistic clarity.
The image celebrates the restorative beauty of flowers and particularly spring. Blossoms burst from rough branches signaling rebirth of the tree. What was barren through the winter now has new hope. This is quite likely the way Van Gogh viewed the blossoms he painted during his time in Saint-Rémy.
