The Misery Islands are a nature preserve located off the coast of Salem Harbor in Salem, MA, although they technically lie in the aquatic territory of neighboring Beverly, MA. The islands got their grim name from a ship captain who was stranded on the islands during a snowstorm in 1620. This view of the islands is as they are seen from West Beach in Beverly Farms, MA.
In this painting they are fancifully imagined with bright colors and interesting terrain. The sky and water are a traditional New England grey that gives you the relaxing feel of the Massachusetts coastline.
