A 'pastoral' landscape painting is likely what you picture when you think of a 19th century European or American painting. Such paintings are characterized by their romanticized vision of nature. These could either be a natural landscape but more often these works would hint at mankind's dominion over the land with images of buildings, cattle, or- in the case of this painting- cultivated fields. These idyllic landscapes became increasingly popular on the tail of the industrial revolution, possibly reflecting early feelings of conflict between love of nature and desire for progress.
